Desanders and desilters are solid control equipment with a set of hydrocyclones that separate sand and silt from the drilling fluids in drilling rigs,which is sorted by shale shaker in the first phase of solids control system.

A hydrocyclone is often used to separate drilling cuttings from drilling mud originating in drilling mud desander and desilter. A hydrocyclone is most likely to be the right choice for processes where “lights” (drilling fluids, e.g.) are the greater part of the mixture and where the “heavies” (drilling cuttings e.g.) settle fairly easily.

Hydrocyclone Desilter

Centrifugal pump is used to pump the drilling fluids from mud tank into the set of hydrocyclones. A hydrocyclone has two exits on the axis: the smaller on the bottom (underflow or reject) and larger at the top (overflow or accept). The underflow is generally the denser or thicker fraction, while the overflow is the lighter or more fluid fraction.

Drilling mud desanders are installed on top of the mud tank following the shale shaker and the degassing machine, but before the desilter. Desander removes the abrasive solids from the drilling fluids which cannot be removed by shale shakers. Normally the solids diameter for desander to be separated would be 45~74μm, and 15~44μm for desilter.
